The Intermountain west is made up of the states Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Nevada and Utah. Although these states are well known for for their natural beauty there are a lot of aspects of this region that most people do not often tour but are definitely worthy of attention. If you have the time and ability then visit these on your next trip..

1. Visit the Mineral Pools- This geological area has a large amount of thermal activity which has resulted in a many soaking hot springs in this region. From homey to exorbitant there is a pool for every taste. For those that are like simplicity then White Sulfur Springs Hotel is the best place for you. Those that like more of a spa feel, check out some of the thermal springs that Colorado has to offer.

2. Hunt for Rock Art- The ancient peoples of the Intermountain west were extremely artistic, and a a lot of there 4000-year old art can remains even today, chipped into rock surfaces throughout the area. For a quick tour, Fremont State Park in Utah has a rewarding trail and interpretive center, for those that like hiking Grand Gulch in Utah is a great place to stop for a visit.

3. Enjoy the Less Famous National Monuments- If you have not been to Yellowstone, then certainly you should see there first, but for those of you that have already done the most popular parks in the west you could think about stopping by the underestimated ones. All together, the west has over 50 National sites, and most of the state have exemplarylocal park systems as well.

4. Drop by the Local Museums (as well as the most popular ones)- A lot of the most interesting museums are those that are not on the map, like the small museum in Three Forks, Montana in which the local people gathered paraphernalia from their area spanning a century and a half. Of course, some of the bigger museums are worth making a special trip for as well, such as the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wy. This museum has five separate galleries which cover some aspect of the west such as Old Guns of the West or Natural History.

5. Learn to Ski- Everyone knows that good weather activities abound in the Intermountain West, but we also have the best snow around. For those of you that are not interested in trying snowboarding, you should consider x-country skiing. The Sun Valley of Idaho has groomed trails as well as the Beaverhead-Deerlodge NF in Montana.

6. Visit a Mountain Lake this coming summer– The beautiful moutains of the western US are full of small and secluded lakes. A lot of these are frequently visited but some of the most beautiful are off the beaten track and often require a long hike to arrive at. One of our top choices is Island Lake in the Wind Rivers. This alpine lake is circled by serated ridges and jagged mountain peaks that were created by the retreqating glaciers of the last ice age. The Wind River mountains are reknow for fishing and backpacking opportunities. Another fantastic place to visit in the Wind Rivers is Lonsome Lake in the Cirque of the Towers area in the southern section of the Wind Rivers.

As you can tell, there are a many great things that you should try to do in the mountain west, instead of the boringgroup tour. Any of the above suggestions will not only be exciting and fun but will provide you with many happy memories for years to come.
