Cartier was found in 1847 by Louis-Francois Cartier. Less than 30 years later, in 1874, Cartier’s son, Alfred, took over the running of the company. Yet, it was the grandsons of Louis-Francois, Louis, Pierre, and Jacques, who really made the name Cartier as popular as it is today.

The Cartier’s retained the ownership and the direction of the company until 1964 when the sons of Jacques and Louis and the daughter of Pierre sold the business. Yet, this did not last for very long. Between the years of 1974 and 1976 Cartier and its affiliates in New York City and London were bought back by the Cartier family.
