Credit Card Applications Galore (Track This Article)

By: david

If you're like me, you've gotten your share of credit card offers in the mail. Each one is an attempt to one-up the others, offering low introductory rates, "rewards" programs, and other bonuses. While these offers can be enticing, the high interest rates and fees that are often coupled with them can get you into a lot of trouble. Before you accept any of these, shop around for the best deal.

Credit card terms vary among lenders. Think about how you plan to use your card. Are you going to pay your balance in full each month? If not, can you handle the interest? Make sure you know the annual fee, the APR, late charges, and if there is a grace period for payments. If you take out cash advances, you'll be paying a higher interest rate, and you probably won't have a grace period in which to pay. All of these factors vary from card to card, so read the terms closely on your credit card offers.

Other things you'll want to consider are how widely accepted the card is and if its services and features meet your needs. For example, you may be interested in a specialty credit card for businesses or students, a cash back or airline mile rewards card, or you may simply prefer a standard credit card. Business owners, for instance, can get bonuses like expense management reports, extra cards for employees, discounts and higher credit limits. Students, on the other hand, tend to get credit card offers especially for people with no prior credit history. While student cards tend to lack high credit limits and rewards, they are a good step towards building credit.

The majority of credit card holders in the U.S., by and large, are content with a standard credit card. These generally include low or 0 apr credit cards and balance transfer cards. While most low rates usually only last for a set period of time, it's important to take advantage of that time to chip away at your balance. If you've found that you've acquired a rather hefty balance on a card with a high rate, it might suit you to transfer that balance to another card with a lower rate.

Regardless of what kind of bells and whistles you want (or don't want) with your plan, you should always look for low or 0 apr credit cards. I think most people would agree that the most important feature a credit card can possess is a low interest rate.
