An odd phenomenon has occurred in our modern era of technology: We have begun to accept change. For centuries the old have scoffed at and down right rejected any notion of change. “If it worked in our day it will do just fine today.” was the battle cry of the old and old at heart. Something happened over the past 10 years where today’s citizens have openly welcomed technology and the embraced the wonders that it beholds. Even the most traditional practices such as dating have gone high tech. The world of online dating, which was once mocked, is now one of the most common ways of finding a lover.

The year 2005 was a landmark year for dating services. U.S. residents paid well over $500 million to online dating services making it the second largest industry for paid subscriptions according to Online Publishers Association. Each day hundreds of unknown dating sites launch, adding to the already crowded segment. Only on the internet can such an enormous feat of complexity be made simple and organized. Online dating has made courtship virtually effortless.

Online dating can be compared to shopping for a mate. It’s as easy as picking a site and literally shopping for the characteristics you deem suitable in a mate. Once selected, a suitor is a mouse click away from meeting the person of their dreams. No longer do individuals have endure horrible blind dates or God for bid, speed dating. Almost all dating sites rely on the picture and profile process. Users must fill out a profile that gages your personality, attractiveness and social aptitude. Once the profile and picture are uploaded, users can then search for others in the database that meets their specific criteria. Considering the divorce rate is over 50%, having information about a potential mate before actually dating can be quite beneficial.

Do not be afraid like an awkward freshmen standing in the corner at a school dance. It is quite normal to feel a little bit apprehensive about online dating. The only way to beat your fear is to jump right in. There are many different dating sites to choose from. The first question you need to ask yourself is, ‘What type of individual and relationship am I looking for?’ Once you know that question you can hone in on your specific dating website. There are all sorts of dating websites such as match.com, eHarmony.com, chemistry.com, hotornot.com, jewishcafe.com, christiansingles.com, plentyoffish.com myspace.com, facebook.com or fling.com. The best thing to do is do a google search for exactly what type of dating site you are looking for.

Once you have found your perfect dating site make sure to be honest when filling out your profile, choose interesting words and pictures and make the habit of actively seeking out many people instead of just a few. Like anything there are some shortcomings of online dating. Some dating sites will put up fake profiles or misleading pictures to attract users to join. Other sites will have an unbalanced ratio of males to females. Some companies charge extra to contact other members, send out spam and use your personal information.
