For dedicated poker players, there’s no greater event than the World Series. The World Series of Poker, that is.

This is an annual event that pits the best poker players around against each other in a series of competitions and games that are designed to bring root out the best player. To do well, you need an encyclopedic knowledge of the game and its varieties, a steady nerve, and a deep purse: the buy-in for the Main Event is a whopping $10,000.

The Event

The WSOP is played, appropriately enough, in Las Vegas. It is the world’s largest poker tournament, and truly lives up to its name. It’s a series of 50 tournaments, played over a month’s time, and while it elevates the best players and can build the reputations of new players (you don’t need to win to gain a reputation; a good showing in the Series can be a player’s ticket to other large tournaments), anyone can enter if they can meet the fees and buy-ins. In recent years, thousands of players have entered the tournament, and the Main Event has offered a multi-million dollar grand prize.

The World Series of Poker got started in 1971, and has grown in popularity since then. There was sporadic television coverage of the Series in the 1970s and ‘80s, but in the last 10 years, that coverage has grown intensive. ESPN currently shows the most Series action, including the whole of the Main Even, and Discovery Channel has shown documentaries of the Series in 2001 and 2002. The steadily rising profile of Series is tied to the steadily rising popularity of poker.

If you can ever get to the World Series of Poker, do so. It’s definitely an event to see, even if you can’t play in the tournaments. You can hobnob with the best poker players around, and watch them at their games, and you can find the absolute coolest collectibles for any poker memorabilia collection.
